What it takes to win in AI right now

What separates winning AI startups from the rest of the pack? And where do investors see the biggest opportunities ahead? PitchBook’s 2026 AI Outlook report has thoughts.

Let’s break where AI is most likely to win big (according to PitchBook’s data):

❤️‍🩹 Healthcare:

  • AI tools for drug discovery and medical imaging are two of the clearest growth stories.

  • Drug discovery tools in particular are projected to grow from a $1.6 billion market in 2025 to $60 billion (!) by 2030 as AI improves clinical trial success and unlocks new medicines.

🧑‍💻 Enterprise software:

  • AI that helps companies manage data, automate customer support, and power internal tools is expected to become core infrastructure.

🤖 Hard tech and infrastructure:

  • Robotics, datacenter efficiency, and AI for logistics and maritime are earlier stage, but could be huge over the decade ahead.

⚠️ But not all AI hype is created equal: There’s some overcrowding in second-tier AI medical scribes, defense drones, parts of code generation, AI marketing tools, and personal assistant apps.

  • In many of these categories, startups risk becoming interchangeable features inside larger platforms rather than standalone winners.

💡 Common themes of winning AI startups: According to the report, the most durable AI companies tend to:

  • Go after big, painful problems in large industries.

  • Build on unique or hard-to-replicate data.

  • Deliver clear ROI.

  • Become part of a customer’s daily workflow.

  • Invest in strong distribution and partnerships.

🗽 The New York angle: NYC sits at the intersection of many of these industries. The next generation of AI winners is likely to be built where the customers already are.
