As he looks to fill a roughly $5 billion budget gap, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani proposed his preliminary budget today, calling for a raise on New York City’s property taxes by 9.5% on an estimated 3 million residential units and more than 100,000 commercial buildings. 💰 (Crain’s New York Business)
The announcement comes on the heels of New York State Governor Kathy Hochul giving the city a $1.5 billion budget-assist over the next two years.
The last time the city increased property tax rates was in the early 2000s.

Tech Jobs: A Reset to Start 2026
The latest jobs data shows a January cooldown in tech employment, but a rebound in job postings, according to a CompTIA analysis. 💼
Here’s what NYC tech leaders need to know:
📉 Tech employment dipped to start the year:
Tech industry employment fell by 20,155 jobs in January, with telecom accounting for 15,000 of those losses.
Tech occupation employment (AKA tech professionals working in all industries) declined by about 2,000, and the tech unemployment rate rose to 3.6% (still below the 4.3% national rate).
📈 But hiring intent picked up:
New tech job postings reached 220,420 in January, with more than 465,000 active postings — nearly 4% higher than December.
In other words: companies are being cautious on payrolls, but still recruiting.
🗽 New York remains a top market:
New York State recorded 10,010 tech job postings in January (+653 month-over-month), keeping it among the top hiring states.
The NYC metro area (which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania) logged 12,057 postings, second best in the nation.
New York accounts for 7% of hiring for dedicated AI job titles, the highest share of any metro.
🎓 Early-career hiring check-in: In January, 20% of tech job postings targeted candidates with 0-3 years of experience, and 33% didn’t specify experience requirements at all.
IBM (a Tech:NYC member!) announced last week that it will triple entry-level U.S. hiring.
