  • A riddle for you on this lovely Friday afternoon: What 35-acre mixed-use complex in NYC is home to 650+ companies with 9,000+ employees, occupies 6 million square feet of space, 700,000 of which are filled with tech firms, recently underwent a $450 million redevelopment, and is becoming a tech hub within the larger NYC tech scene?

    • The answer (if the headline didn’t spoil it), is Brooklyn’s Industry City, where its ample amount of space, amenities, and proximity to other techies are major selling points for tech companies. 🧑‍💻

The Ripped Bodice captures hearts in Park Slope, sparking Brooklyn’s romance revival (Brooklyn Paper)

  • Speaking of love, romance novels are having a moment in NYC. 💗 The Ripped Bodice, Brooklyn’s first bookstore dedicated entirely to romance, has fostered a strong community of readers, writers, and book lovers. The shop expanded from its LA store to NYC in late 2023.

    • “Being in New York, so close to the heart of publishing, brings a completely different energy compared to LA as well,” said Leah Koch, one of the owners.

Why one NYC teen chose a cybersecurity apprenticeship over after-school hangouts (Chalkbeat New York)

  • Addison Wang is an 18-year-old senior at Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School. He’s also an employee at the Education Department’s Division of Instructional and Information Technology, which helps safeguard digital infrastructure for more than one million students and staff.

    • Addison is one of 389 student apprentices across the city’s public schools who are part of the city’s Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship, which gives students access to paid work opportunities for in-demand fields well before graduation.

  • It was a scorcher of a week in NYC! 🥵 Luckily, the city has put together an interactive map that lists all of NYC’s water sprayers. You can also use it to find the city’s drinking fountains, outdoor pools, park tree canopies, and even the leafiest blocks.

    • In case you’re wondering, yes, it is in fact legal to jump into NYC’s fountains when it’s hot out.
