The dig-out king of New York City (Curbed)
Meet the Greenpoint UX designer turned snow-day entrepreneur who’s charging triple digits to free cars buried in post-storm ice. ❄️🚗
Armed with a metal shovel and a well-designed flyer (he’s a designer after all), he’s found a very New York way to turn frozen snow into sweet dough.
NY coach’s winning streak earns him trip to Super Bowl (NBC New York)
A Long Island high school football coach is punching a ticket to the Super Bowl. 🏈
With a jaw-dropping 66-game winning streak, Garden City’s Dave Ettinger has been named the NFL High School Coach of the Year and will be honored at the championship game this weekend.
An added bonus: The Garden City football program will also receive $15,000.
Looking for a spot to watch the game this Sunday? Here are a few NYC sports bar recs.
From New York to Milan: Meet the Team USA athletes with ties to the Empire State (NBC New York)
Turns out New York is actually one of Team USA’s biggest pipelines to the Winter Olympics. 🥇
From Olympic hopefuls born in the city to luge stars training in Lake Placid, Team USA is sending 23 athletes to Milan with New York ties.
In praise of the tuna melt, the ultimate NYC sandwich (Gothamist)
This diner classic is going through a bit of a renaissance lately, as chefs around the city are putting their own unique spin on this New York classic.
Apparently the tuna melt has a pretty good agent: It even had a cameo in “Heated Rivalry.” 🤷🥪
I am the Excel world champion (The Guardian)
Diarmuid Early is known as “the LeBron James of spreadsheets.” He first started using Excel while in college in Ireland. When he moved to New York in 2013, he entered his first Microsoft Excel competition and hasn’t looked back (even with V LOOKUP). 📊
Today he is the Excel world champion after defeating 500 other competitors in Las Vegas for a $5,000 prize (which he donated to charity) and a wrestler-style world championship belt.
Excel this weekend, New York! 🗽
