Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced yesterday that his administration had balanced the city budget, thanks in part to support from Albany, new revenue, and cost cutting measures. (New York Times)
The total executive budget totals about $125 billion for the coming fiscal year, and the City Council must ratify it by June 30.
$1 billion was saved in part by delaying class size restrictions and the state providing additional school aid, and $2.3 billion was saved by delaying pension payments for unionized city employees.
World Cup transportation plans are getting a major reboot. Shuttle bus fares to MetLife Stadium just dropped from $80 to $20 after New York State chipped in $6 million to subsidize rides. ⚽ (The Athletic)
Fans who already bought $80 shuttle tickets will receive $60 refunds, and the expanded service will now use hundreds of classic yellow school buses to move as many as 18,000 fans on peak match days.
NYC also announced a new dedicated bus lane in Queens, designed to speed up trips to LaGuardia Airport before the World Cup.

AI Hiring Keeps On Climbing
Tech hiring is still moving forward, with gains concentrated in artificial intelligence.
CompTIA’s latest Tech Jobs Report shows demand climbing for AI engineers, strong growth in New York job postings, and a hiring market that increasingly values flexibility over formal credentials. 🤖
What’s new: New job postings for tech jobs nationwide reached a three-year high at 271,483.
In all, there were more than 575,000 active job postings for tech positions in April.
📈 New York has the most open roles: NYC once again ranked as the top metro for tech job postings in April, with 19,094 postings — up 1,771 from March. New York also ranked second nationally for growth in tech postings month-over-month.
The city also led the nation for remote tech job postings, with 3,596 listings in April.
Finance remains a major driver of tech hiring here too: New York topped the country in finance-sector tech hiring with 1,763 postings.
🤖 AI hiring in particular is surging: The biggest jump in tech hiring activity came from AI roles. Artificial intelligence engineer postings rose by 3,440 month-over-month to 18,138 postings nationally.
Dedicated AI hiring is becoming increasingly concentrated in New York: The city accounted for 9% of all postings for artificial intelligence and machine learning positions, ahead of San Francisco at 8%. 💪
CompTIA’s AI Hiring Intent Index also shows AI-related postings dramatically outpacing broader tech hiring growth over the last two years. 🆙
Yes, but: Employers still want more than AI specialists: Software developer and systems engineer roles remain the largest categories overall, with 56,440 and 26,611 postings respectively.
Cybersecurity, tech support, networking, and IT project management roles also continued to post gains in remote hiring activity.

🏙️ The takeaway: The tech hiring market has become more specialized. New York continues to dominate AI hiring, fintech demand, and overall tech job volume, even as employers get more selective about the roles they’re filling.
