August’s data on tech hiring continues to be ambiguous as labor markets were once more rocked by a weaker-than-expected jobs report.

What’s 🆕: August proved to be another mixed month for the tech sector as hiring activity continues to be inconsistent, according to CompTIA’s latest tech jobs report analysis. But the NYC tech scene remained strong. 💪

📉 In the losses column:

  • The unemployment rate for tech jobs ticked up to 3% in August (compared to 2.9% in July).

  • Tech companies reduced staffing by a net 2,311 positions for all positions.

Yes, but: The tech unemployment rate remains more than a full percentage point behind that of the national rate of 4.2%.

📈 In the wins column:

  • There were 446,763 active employer job postings for tech positions in August, 42% of which were newly added last month.

  • Active employer job listings that included AI skills requirement increased once more — and the figure is up 94% since August 2024.

🗽 NYC is making great strides, both in the tech sector and overall:

  • The broader NYC metro leads the country with 157,500 jobs added in the past year, per NYC EDC data, more than double second-place Philadelphia with 65,300 jobs added.

  • This year, the unemployment rate has fallen from 5.6% to 4.8%.

  • The NYC metro area ranked second in the nation in tech job postings in August with 10,595.

  • In July, NYC added 8,600 private sector jobs, for a total of more than 143,900 private sector jobs than in February 2020. This record private sector job total reflects the overall resilience of the city’s economy despite broader headwinds.
