Techno-optimism is on full display at NY Tech Week (NY Post)
As New York Tech Week winds down, the optimism for tech in New York is only winding up. 🧑💻🗽
The week-long decentralized conference drew 40,000 attendees across 1,600+ events, and investors are increasingly bullish on the city’s tech scene. We couldn’t agree more.
The business of the New York Knicks (Vogue)
The Knicks’ dominant playoff run has become a powerful engine for NYC’s economy. What’s happening on the court is spilling into fashion, media, and retail, turning this playoff run into a citywide business moment. 🔥
The Knicks’ Finals appearance has sparked a surge in merch, with brands like Kith and New York or Nowhere seeing massive demand (and long lines) for limited-edition drops tied to the team. The team has already generated an estimated $202 million for the city.
Celebrities sitting courtside have generated tens of millions in media value, while the team’s playoff run could drive up to $180 million in revenue for the team.
New York City can’t handle Knicks watch parties. And that’s a great thing (Curbed)
Beyond economics, this Knicks run is uniting the city in the form of watch parties. From tiny East Village bars to massive venues like Radio City Music Hall, New Yorkers are packing into any space with a screen to watch the Knicks in the NBA Finals. 📺
Massive crowds have packed venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn with some events so crowded that the city briefly shut down outdoor watch parties near Madison Square Garden before reversing course.
A reminder: Game 2 tips off tonight at 8:30pm in San Antonio.
Queens apostle of the ‘swoosh’ restores netless rims in city parks (The City Reporter)
While the Knicks dominate on the big stage, one Queens resident is improving the game at the neighborhood level, one net at a time. 🛠️
Craig Campanella spends his weekends installing nets on bare hoops across Queens, restoring the iconic “swoosh” to courts that had gone without.
It’s a small but net-positive act: The full-time data manager’s goal for the year is to install 50 nets onto the approximately 2,900 basketball hoops in city parks.
Goodbye, pennies: NY lawmakers pass bill to round to the nearest nickel (Gothamist)
Take a penny, leave a penny… or just round it. New York is one step closer to eliminating the coin from everyday transactions. 💵
Lawmakers gave their two cents and passed a bill that would require cash transactions to be rounded to the nearest five cents, following a federal move to stop producing pennies that cost more to make than they’re worth.
The change wouldn’t affect credit cards or digital payments (but would affect good-luck penny finders).
Good luck this weekend, New York! 🍀
